Product & GTM with RecruitingMonk
RecruitingMonk was a fully bootstrapped startup. Its B2B HR services business was funding a new B2C product venture. The product had not been built yet, so there were no customers, no feedback but there was some proof of demand based on the insights from the existing B2B business.
The founder had no shortage of ideas: a new product, a different version of the same product, an tool that might be a “game changer.” Each idea was reasonable on its own. Together they threatened to scatter a lean team.
He didn’t need more ideas. He needed a sounding board who would help him choose.
The approach
1. Focus first: I spent the first weeks learning the vision through the founder’s eyes and asking questions until the priorities were clear. The aim was one product, stabilised and adopted, before any second one.
2. Turn services into a product: The company already sold HR services to businesses. We converted parts of that offering into a subscription product, which opened up smaller firms that couldn’t afford a full services engagement. That gave three ways to sell: product alone, services alone, or a product and services bundle. The product lowered monthly cost for customers while widening the pool of businesses the company could acquire and serve.
3. Community-led go-to-market: We built distribution leveraging the community that was already built by the founder:
-
Domain experts got early access to try the product and speak about it honestly in their networks.
-
Early adopters who loved it were encouraged to share and were given referral codes.
-
Access was limited, with everyone else on a waitlist. That created demand, and it showed us the interest was before we opened up.
-
We then widened access to independent recruiters, recruitment consultancies and small startups, and word of mouth and referrals carried it from there.
4. A playbook, not a dependency: I coached the founder through the reasoning behind each decision so it could become a reusable framework, from idea to execution to GTM, that the team could run without me.
Keeping Ashfaq (founder) focused was going to be key to success. Every conversation surfaced a new idea, and most of them were right in theory. But none of them mattered until one product was out and customers were using it.
Once we shipped, customer feedback began driving the roadmap. That changed the conversation: prioritisation was no longer opinion, it was what customers were asking for.
The outcome
-
$500K ARR by the end of the engagement, with the bundle handling custom solutions for select larger clients.
-
93% quarter-on-quarter retention
-
A lean team, a stronger company. Headcount grew only modestly (a few hires and interns), yet the company moved from being service-led to product-led.
-
A founder who understood why every decision was made, a team with a shared operating thesis, and a foundation that didn’t need rebuilding for the next phase of growth.
Here is what Ashfaq, Founder & CEO of RecruitingMonk had to say:
“Linish is an absolute gem. He is a street smart business guy. He has helped RecruitingMonk in making some key business decisions. What sets him apart is his diverse domain knowledge which he brings to the table.”
